Solar Light Installation, Charging and Care Guide

A well-positioned solar panel and regular care help your lights make use of the daylight available. Installation, charging time and controls vary between models, so use this guide alongside the instructions supplied with your product.

Before you install

  1. Check the contents of the box against the product page and supplied instructions.
  2. Find the switch, controls and panel before mounting anything permanently.
  3. Inspect the product and cable for damage. Contact us if anything appears damaged or missing.
  4. Plan the light position and the panel position separately if your model uses a remote panel.

Where should the solar panel go?

Choose a position with direct sunlight during the day. Trees, roof edges, fences and buildings can cast shade at different times, so check the planned position over the day. Keep the panel clear of leaves and avoid locations that are frequently covered or obstructed.

If your string lights sit under a patio roof, a separate solar panel may need to sit outside the shaded area. Check the available cable length before choosing the mounting position. Do not stretch or modify the cable to make it reach.

First charge and first night

Follow the model's instructions for switch position and initial charging. Charging and runtime depend on sunlight, battery condition and lighting mode; there is no single charging time that applies to every product. Choose the mode using the supplied controls and check the lights after dark.

Many solar lights respond to ambient light. Nearby bright lighting can affect models that use an automatic dusk sensor. Check your model's instructions before assuming a light that stays off during daylight has failed.

Mounting string lights and garden lights

Use appropriate supports and the mounting method recommended for your product. Support string-light cable along its planned route and avoid placing tension on connectors or the solar panel. Keep cables away from areas where they could be tripped over, cut or damaged.

For ground or stake lights, follow the installation instructions and choose a suitable location that does not obstruct walking or mowing. A product's outdoor weather-resistance rating does not automatically mean it can be submerged or installed where water collects.

Why are my lights dim or switching off early?

  • Shade or short daylight: reassess the panel location and available sunlight.
  • Dirty or covered panel: gently remove surface dirt and leaves.
  • Mode or brightness setting: check the model's available controls and instructions.
  • Nearby lighting: check whether ambient light is affecting an automatic sensor.
  • Damaged components: stop using a damaged product and contact our team.

These checks can identify common setup issues but do not replace a product assessment. If the problem continues, share your order number, product model, panel position and a description of the symptoms with support.

Routine care and replacement parts

Keep the panel surface clear with a soft cloth and follow the product's cleaning instructions. Check mounting points and visible cables periodically. Only use replacement bulbs, panels, batteries or chargers that are confirmed compatible with the exact model; similar appearance does not establish compatibility.

Browse festoon replacement bulbs or replacement solar chargers, and ask our team to confirm compatibility before ordering.

Where can I find model-specific information?
